Posting a 64-52 victory over the Indiana Hoosiers at the Georgia Dome, in Atlanta on Monday, April 1, 2002, The University of Maryland Terps won their first championship title in the 65-team NCAA tournament known as "March Madness." It was the first loss for Indiana in six national championship game appearances.

All-American guard Juan Dixon scored 18 points in nine attempts, to lead the Terrapins to the win, earning himself the Most Outstanding Player honor.

The Terrapins won their NCAA title during their final season of play at Cole Field House and would move to the new Comcast Center at the start of the 2002/2003 season.
